The history
of Goa can be stretched to the
3rd century BC when it was part
of the Maurya empire. He was
subsequently tried by the Satvahanas
of Kolhapur and then he spends
the Chalukyas of Badami. For
the next few centuries Goa succesively
was considered by the Silharas,
Kadambas and the Chalukyas of
Kalyani and other leaders of
Deccan in India. The Kadambas,
a local Hindu dynasty based
in Chandrapura in our day-Chandor
Salcete referred an ineradicable
mark in the pre-colonial history
and culture of Goa. In 1312
Goa was under the domination
of the sultanate of Delhi. But
in 1370, the kingdom was forced
to resign Harohara I of the
Vijaynagar empire.
Until 1469 the rule Vijaynagar
holding terrotiry Goa, then
east past the Bahamani sultans
of Gulbarga. After the dynasty
crumbled Bahamani, Adil Shahis
Bijapur Goa is their auxiliary
capital. The history of Goa
has changed with the arrival
of Vasco da Gama in 1498.
Vasco da Gama is the first European
to land on the soil of India
by sea. He landed in Calicut,
now Kozhikode in Kerala. It
is followed by his arrival in
Old Goa. The Portuguese arrived
with the aim of seting a colony
and, hence, the confiscationg
control of trade in spices from
other European countries. With
the institution of the Inquisition
many of the local population
of Goa was converted to Christianity
by missionaries. But still many
converted Hindus have maintained
their heritage. To escape the
Inquisition and harassment,
thousands fled away from the
state to neighbouring states
Mangalore and Karwar in Karnataka.
With the arrival of other European
powers in India in the 16th
century, most Portuguese possession
in India was handed over to
British and Dutch. But the history
of Goa shows a particularity.
As the Portuguese continued
their possession in Goa.
